The extensor digitorum muscle plays a crucial role in the movement of the toes, specifically by allowing for their extension. This muscle is located on the anterior part of the leg and aids in lifting the toes upwards, which is essential during activities like walking, running, and balancing.

In contrast, the other muscles listed serve different functions. The peronius longus primarily assists in the eversion of the foot and helps to support the arch, while the soleus and gastrocnemius are primarily involved in plantar flexion of the foot at the ankle. Although the soleus and gastrocnemius contribute to overall lower leg movements and stability, their primary function is related to activities like pushing off the ground rather than directly facilitating toe movement. Thus, the extensor digitorum is the primary muscle associated with extending the toes, making it the correct choice in this context.
